Did you know that if there is a trash pickup service available in your area that it is illegal to burn trash and other refuse ? Yep, it sure is. Most folks are not aware of this so we are adding this information to our website as well as some links to important information that will help you in determining what you can and cannot burn.

The Little Axe Fire Department does not require burn permits for the unincorporated area that we respond to for fire protection. It is appreciated however if you will notify us of your intent to perform an open burn and provide us with that information about the location, time and who will be watching over the burn, so that we are aware of it when calls come in for the same location. You can reach us for this non-emergency event by calling (405) 386-7700.

If you happen to live in the area and are actually within the Norman City limits, other laws will apply. The City of Norman requires burn permits if you live within the city limits. You can reach them at (405) 292-9780.

In an effort to assist you in determining if you should burn or not we have provided the following links to documents that will help. These documents are provided by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). More information can be obtained by contacting DEQ directly at (405) 702-6100.

**NOTE:  In order to read these documents you will need to have Adobe Reader installed on your computer which is available for free download from their website.

Open Burning Fact Sheet - July 2009

We hope you find this information useful and that it allows you to make good decisions about what, when and most importantly, "IF" it is ok to burn.

Feel free to contact us any time for more information or to even schedule a site visit by our local Fire Marshal. You can also drop by the station behind Pecan Valley Junction Store any Wednesday night between 6:00pm and 9:00pm during our regular weekly scheduled maintenance and training.

Little Axe Firefighters - Helping Out in 2011 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Winnie Russell
Monday, 12 December 2011 03:40

When the Alarm Sounded for mutual aid at around 1:30pm that day, Little Axe Firefighters were just having lunch after the second wildfire call that day already. As always, the Little Axe Firefighters answered the call in force. They were responding to a call to assemble the Cleveland County Wildland Task Force to help Harrah as a monster wildfire was being swept into town on high winds. They were able to hold off the flames and save the school and many homes that were in the path of the flames. Unfortunately, some homes were still lost to the raging fires.

A short time later, just a few days it seemed they were off again on another Task Force mission to assist Oklahoma City.Over the following days Little Axe Firefighters manned crews in two Task Force deployments with Oklahoma City fires, one North, one South and also answerd the call of their neighbors in Noble for assistance at the same time. Not a firefighter or fire truck sat still or undeployed.

These are just a couple of the examples of the 2011 Fire Season for the LIttle Axe Firefighters.

A few months later after the worst of these awful fires had at last been extinguished, the department recieved a large envelope from The Harrah Special Needs Class. The entire class had hand written individual thank you notes to all of the firefighters for helping to save there school and there homes, and for being the heros who came to there aid keeping them all safe from harm that day.

A month or so after that another large envelope arrived. This one from our Govener Mary Fallin, also thanking Little Axe Fire Department  for all there help with the wildfires also.

When asked about there many long days of firefighting and being heros to all these children and those in need, they simply responded "It is great to be recognized, but we were just doing our job. This is what we do."

Storm Shelter Registration Comes to Little Axe FD PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Burrows

The Little Axe Fire Department has begun registering storm shelters within their response area. This can be very important in the event of a disaster as these sites are often unknown to emergency responders. During situations such as the recent tornados it is possible that you may find yourself unable to leave your shelter due to debris that has landed on the entry/exit door. By registering your shelter with the fire department, you insure that your location will be checked for occupants in your registered shelter.

It is recommended that you register your shelter as well as having an emergency kit in your shelter with you. You can find the registration form in our forms section under public forms, or go to it directly by clicking on this link: Storm Shelter Registration

There are several vendors that provide some great options for disaster kits you can keep in your shelter with you also. A couple of our favorites are Life Secure and Quake Kare.
